The new media technology will be an asset for regional Indian Cinema

It is high time the Indian regional movies move to the new technologies as it will make them easier to store, transfer and access, said Ujwal Nirgundkar, Chairman, SMPTE India. He was speaking at the seminar on New Media technology and Novel distribution methods conducted as part of the 19th IFFK.
The new media technologies such as DCP’s, cloud storage and DTH will be largely beneficial for regional Indian Cinema. The Indian film industry is as diverse as the Europe since both share the common factor of films in numerous languages. Though the number of film screens in India have increased during the period from 1950’s to 90’s , a declining trend in the post 90 era brought down the number of screens per ten lakh population (NSPTP) from 1.65 to 0.8 in 2013. Cinema, one of the fastest growing industries in the world is unquestionably dominated by Hollywood which holds 70% of the total share. Indian cinema Industry holds just 10% of the global share. However this needs to be seen as an opportunity since we have the potential and opportunity to increase our share as time pass by.
The film distribution and transfer have seen revolutionary changes over the last couple of decades. The most noticeable among this was the transformation from Film to Digital storage. This transition has made distribution of cinema, faster, efficient and simple. Even today cinema halls hold a major share in film distribution. Today this is enabled by DCP’s (Digital Cinema Prints), which is protected by KCM (Key Delivery Message) and Cloud storage which uses server space in Internet to store the movies.
Though DCP is the most widely accepted film transfer and storage mechanism today, it has many compatibility issues related to. This makes Cloud storage the next available alternative to film transfer and storage, which will completely wipe out the concept of physical content transfer. Also these methods will benefit the regional cinema as these storage and transfer mechanisms make cinema more easily accessible. This will also help in bringing the cinema directly from the producer to the viewers. DTH is also an important element of new media technology and this helps in screening the cinema at numerous locations simultaneously. This will in turn help in bringing down piracy rates and increase in revenue.
Today 2K is the standard International film format resolution and to make, store and transfer films at such high resolutions we need to have better Internet and other facilities. Internet – 2 could be considered as the best possible way to overcome the limitations in High data storage and transfers, as it guarantees a minimum speed of 10 GB/sec and could transfer data at speeds as high as 100 GB/sec. This state of the art facility is enabled by Fiber Optic Cables and terrestrial satellites. Though this technology is yet to reach India, this has been tested and successfully functioning in many western countries.
