Synopsis of the film:
Jalamsam deals with the tragic transformation of an agrarian society into one that treats land as real estate. Through the twists and turns in the life of Kunjoonj, a shrewd but naïve tenant farmer who has a bloody past and a bleak future to reckon with, the film explores the sociopolitical and environmental transitions in central Travancore. To crush a communist uprising, Kunjoonj gets involved in a bloodied conflict with the workers who are his own brethren. After serving a long jail term, Kunjoonj realizes that he is a misfit in the new Kerala. The villages have been swept away by the storm of globalization. The youth of Kerala are no more interested in working the land. Kunjoonj is an invalid in the new social order that makes him choose the path of crime. Jalamsam, the title, hints at the most elemental form of sustenance. Life sprouts from water; it is one of the basic essentials of existence. The film portrays what happens when its organic presence gets drained from our lives.
