OPEN FORUM

The 19th IFFK has re launched its Open Forum session after a period of two years. The forum, organized by The Federation of Film Societies of India- Keralam, discussed the topic `Taking the Regional Films to the World’.  The presence of eminent dignitaries like Film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Casting Director Uma Da Cunha, Writer and Film Scholar Gonul Donmez- Colin and curator Amrit Gangar were in the panel. Senior Journalist M.G.Radhakrishnan was the moderator. The audience participation made the session more open and live.
While Hollywood films are ruling the festival world, most of our remarkable regional art films are not getting promoted. In India, art films are made in over 39 regional languages annually, but with regard to acceptance it lags back, said M G Radhakrishnan. Uma Da Cunha expresses her concern about the absence of Indian regional films from the famous festivals. “There was a period when Indian films were screened in each and every category in the Cannes festival. But nowadays no Indian films are screened in the fest in the competition category, said she.
Amrit Gangar is of the opinion that, our regional films need domestic acceptance primarily rather than creating concerns about the International acceptance. Most of our best art films in regional languages are not seen by Indians. So the primary thing we must do is to familiarize the northern films to the south and vice- versa, he said. Gonul Donmez-Colin said that making films only to participate in festival and for awards is not good. If the films can offer a visual treat it will surely get accepted, she added.
