‘Malayalam cinema today’ section includes seven new Malayalam films. The films in this package keep a certain distance from the glitz and glamour of commercial films. The richness of visuals and novel approaches of storytelling are the main features of these films.

‘Jalamsam’ is a distinct film by M.P. Sukumaran Nair due its unusual plot. It deals with the tragic transformation of an agrarian society into one that treats land as real estate. Through the twists and turns in the life of Kunjoonj, a shrewd but naive tenant farmer who has a bloody past and a bleak future to reckon with, the film explores the sociopolitical and environmental transitions in central Travancore.
N K Muhammed Koya’s ‘Alif’ is a distinct take on the situation of Muslim female society in Kannur, their struggles and problems. The film exposes the perils of a patriarchal system and the suffering of women under it.
‘Oraalppokkam’ is a film set mostly on the premises of Himalayas. The film tells the story of Maya and Mahi who had decided to break up after five years of living together. After a few days, Maya calls Mahi from Kedarnath, just a day before the happening of a cloud-burst in the Kedar valley. The film is about Mahi’s search for Maya which sends him down a journey of startling self-revelations.
