I Never Surrender to Censorship: Hossein Shahabi

“I am one of the few Iranian film makers who do not surrender to censorship,” said noted Iranian Director Hossein Shahabi. He was speaking in the session, ‘In conversation with the Director’ conducted in connection with IFFK 19th Edition. In Iran critical films are difficult to produce. But I never compromised. We had managed to release our film after several trials, added Shahabi.
Since I have great respect to music, I never use unnecessary music in my films. To a question on why he doesn’t take a film on music, he replied, “I am very disappointed that it’s not widely accepted or known in Iran.” When asked about his response to Indian films, he said, “nobody in the world is unfamiliar with Indian Cinema’ for which he received great applause. Tawfeek Barhom, the lead actor in the inaugural film Dancing Arabs also attended the function.

Disaster was required to create the plot of our story, though the film talks about spirituality, philosophy and environment, said Sanalkumar Sasidharan, director of Six Feet High (Oraal Pokkam) during the conversation. Being a crowd funded movie, we gave full freedom to all the artists. The silence depicted in the climax of the movie can be taken in any angle according to the perspective of the viewers, added the director. The main actor Prakash Bare was also present. Noted Film Critic Saibal Chatterjee conducted the programme.
